Early Life
Sean John Combs, born in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood on November 4, 1969, is best known for his hit song “In My Feelings.” The singer grew up in Mt. Vernon, New York, and attended the Bronx’s Catholic Boys School.
In 2021, Combs officially changed his middle name from Puffy to Love. He has also gone by Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy, and P. Diddy. When he was in high school, he used to puff out his chest to make his body seem larger, earning him the nickname Puffy.
Music Producer and Bad Boy Entertainment
Combs majored in business administration at Howard University, producing weekly dance parties and running an airport shuttle service while attending classes. He dropped out to pursue an internship at Uptown Records, which led to a talent director position. Combs rapidly rose to the level of vice president and had success producing several key artists for Uptown but left the company in the early 1990s.
He founded Bad Boy Entertainment in 1993, working with rap, hip-hop, and R&B recording artists such as Mariah Carey, New Edition, Method Man, Babyface, TLC, Boyz II Men, Lil’ Kim, SWV, Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Shooting Controversy
In December 1999, Combs and his then-girlfriend, actor and singer Jennifer Lopez, were allegedly involved in a shooting incident at a New York City nightclub, where three people were injured. Combs was later charged with four counts of illegal gun possession and one count of bribery; prosecutors claimed that he offered his driver, Wardel Fenderson, $50,000 to say that the loaded gun police had found at the scene of the crime was Fenderson’s. His trial began in late January 2001.
On March 16, 2001, Combs was cleared of all charges, as was his bodyguard, Anthony “Wolf” Jones. Combs’ protégé, the young rapper Jamal “Shyne” Barrow—who was accused of firing wildly inside the nightclub and injuring the three bystanders—was found guilty of assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a weapon but was cleared of the more serious charge of attempted murder.
Later Albums: From The Saga Continues to The Love Album
In 2001, Combs released his third studio album, The Saga Continues… Next came two compilation albums: 2002’s We Invented the Remix followed by Bad Boy’s 10th Anniversary…The Hits in 2004. As part of the Bad Boys II movie soundtrack, Combs collaborated with rappers Nelly and Murphy Lee in 2004 to produce the hit “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” which earned the trio a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Although his Bad Boy music label began waning, it found new life with Combs’ 2006 release Press Play, which featured Brandy, Mary J. Blige, and Timbaland. Three years later, Combs formed the group Diddy-Dirty Money, which found commercial success with the release of their 2010 album Last Train to Paris.

Ex-Girlfriends
He has been in several high-profile relationships, but has never been married. Sexual Assault Lawsuits and Charges
Combs was sued by several women who claimed he sexually assaulted them in the fall of 2023. In addition, he is being sued by a fellow music producer for sexual harassment.
According to The New York Times, his former girlfriend Cassie filed a lawsuit on November 17, 2023, claiming Combs abused her physically, forced her to have sex with other men, and raped her in 2018. The lawsuit seeks “unspecified damages” from Combs. A lawyer for Combs says he vehemently denies the allegations. In just one day after filing the lawsuit, Cassie and Combs reached an undisclosed settlement. As for resolving this matter amicably, she said, “I have decided that I can control some of the terms.”. A few months later, CNN released a video that appeared to show Combs striking Cassie two times inside a Los Angeles hotel in March 2016. His “disgusting” behavior in the footage was apologized for two days later on Instagram.
The settlement with Cassie was followed by civil lawsuits filed by two other women alleging sexual abuse by Combs. According to the Associated Press, one plaintiff claimed Combs drugged, raped, and distributed footage of the attack without her consent in 1991. She and a friend were allegedly sexually assaulted by Combs and R&B singer Aaron Hall in the early 1990s. In an attempt to stop the plaintiff from speaking up, Combs physically assaulted her a few days later, according to the plaintiff, who was 16 at the time. There has been no comment from Hall regarding the lawsuit. As of March 2024, Combs is being sued in two separate cases.
A third lawsuit accusing Combs of raping a 17-year-old in 2003 was filed on December 6. Combs released a statement denying all the allegations: “I did not do any of the horrible things being alleged.”. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve watched people try to assassinate my character and wreck my reputation. There have been shocking allegations brought against me by individuals seeking a quick payday.”
Combs’ legal entanglements increased in 2024. Combs has been accused of sexually harassing and threatening producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones for more than a year, according to the federal lawsuit filed in February. After Dawn Richard’s lawsuit was filed in September, Combs was accused of sexual assault and withholding payment. Diddy-Dirty Money, which Richard co-founded with Combs, evolved into a girl group in the 2000s. September saw the emergence of an 11th accuser, a former employee of Combs. A lawsuit filed by Combs claims he raped her and his security head in 2001. It is expected that 120 additional accusers will file claims against the embattled celebrity by November.
In addition to court proceedings, Combs has been subjected to a number of lawsuits. His TV network, Revolt, was relaunched in November 2023 with his resignation as chairman. Hulu canceled a planned reality series featuring Combs and his family the following month. At the request of the mayor, the mogul returned a key to the city, and his old college, Howard University, revoked his honorary degree and canceled his scholarship program.
Federal Criminal Charges
A Department of Homeland Security agent conducted authorized searches of Combs’ Los Angeles and Miami homes in late March 2024. There was no immediate confirmation that Combs was the target of the investigation, according to CNN and The Los Angeles Times.
The day after the raids, Combs’ attorney asserted that he was innocent: “This unprecedented ambush-accompanied by an advanced, coordinated media presence-leads to an unnecessary rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless allegations in civil lawsuits.”
Several charges were brought against Combs by federal authorities in September 2024, including sex trafficking, forced labor, drugs offenses, kidnapping, attack, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors issued a revised indictment in January 2025 to further detail their racketeering conspiracy charge. After pleading not guilty, Combs is now in jail awaiting trial.
